Called “Weirdo shirts,” the style caught on among enthusiasts at car shows across America in what’s known as the “Kustom Kulture Scene” Ed “Big Daddy” Roth needed a mascot to promote his custom car kits and art brand, so he created a grotesque green/grey rat with wild eyes and sharp teeth-an intentional opposite fo that other wholesome “family style” mouse, which Roth detested. Rat fink is a character not even a mother could love – crazy eyes, warped body, gaping mouth, and greasy overalls, emblazoned with his “R.F.” initials.Rat Fink, immediately caught on after appearing in a Car Craft magazine ad in 1963, showing up on shirts, toys, stickers, and much more.Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos was a 1960s novelty music group led by Roth (known as Mr. Gasser). Formed in the early 1960s, they released a few bizarre surf rock albums, most notably 1963’s Hot Rod Hootenanny. In the 1960s plastic models of many of Roth’s monsters, including Mr. Gasser and other weird creatures were all the rage. Despite never actually appearing in his own animated productions, Rat Fink has become, once again, one of the most recognizable delinquents around.
