eBay 1721a Genealogy Family History 1890’s Delbert A. Coffin This social calling card is from the 1890’s. It belonged to Delbert A. Coffin. There is no other information to offer. However, based on where I purchased this card, I suspect this man was from New England, and possibly from the Milan, NH area. But this is only partially informed speculation. On the blank reverse is penciled “Delbert” and it appears to be period. if so, there is a possibility it was written by Delbert himself. But there is no way to tell unless a current family member had an example of his signature. The image is of children in a snowball fight and making the base piece for a snowman. Also called visiting cards, this custom was strong in the middle & upper classes during the last half of the 19th century. When a person went calling on another person, if the visitee was not available or not at home, the visitor would leave such a card. This custom was formalized enough so that it was common that there would be a tray on a front hall table just for the purpose of leaving a calling card. Note however, this card is likely from a middle class person. Upper class cards tended to be with better quality printing, as in often engraved, on better quality paper, as in coated stock as an example. Also the upper class calling cards tended to not have imagery. One of the possible effects of new technology may have contributed to the demise of this custom, or even the direct cause of this custom stopping – the telephone. With being able to call ahead, the need for a calling card was lessened. Very good condition w/ some minor spots on the blank reverse and some slight corner rounding. At time of manufacture, the card was cut off-center on both bottom and left edges. This was in the making; the card has not been trimmed. 3 1/8” x 1 5/8” All items original to period – No reproductions sold in my store.
