BACKGROUNDThis rare item relates to the early banking/goldsmith firm of The Three Squirrels, 19 Fleet St, London and will be of great interest to any who are interested in how money was transacted before the large banking firms were established. In 1650 Thomas PINCKNEY was granted permission by Charles II to erect the sign of The Three Squirrels to symbolize his firm of goldsmith-banking at 19 Fleet St. Gradually this became the most favoured firm for the aristocracy and the church to carry on their financial dealings. By the beginning of the 18th century there was a partnership of George WANLEY, Richard NICHOLLS and Abraham FOWLER, the latter joining in 1719 and dying in 1737. Subsequent partners included James ROCKE (d. 1738), Thomas WARD d.1743) and Samuel BENNETT (retired 1762). Then came George CLIVE, Francis GOSLING and Benjamin SHARPE. In time the firm evolved to become BARCLAYS BANK. The present item is one of a small collection that I shall be listing featuring most of the above names. All of them are very rare, original and in good condition. This particular Receipt measures 6.3″ x 3.6″, has been carefully preserved and is in remarkable condition with no creases, tears or other defects apart from a small nibble in the top RH corner. It is blank on the reverse.It relates to the the time of the Collapse of the South Sea Company and shows that John Pemberton received £80.6.0 from Messrs NICHOLLS & FOWLER which “they Rec’d at Ye South Sea House for the use of Mr Henry Evans” NOTE: The SOUTH SEA COMPANY was established in 1711 and hoped to become involved in the lucrative Slave Trade. The Company stock rose greatly in value as it expanded its operations dealing in government debt, and peaked in 1720 before suddenly collapsing to little above its original flotation price. The notorious economic bubble thus created, which ruined thousands of investors, became known as the South Sea Bubble.
