10 (TEN!) different World War II soldier letters from January 1 to July 28, 1945 written “Somewhere in France” by private Robert L Johnson back home to his folks Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson at 1520 Sturm Ave. in Indianapolis Indiana. All contained in their original mailing envelopes. Great soldier content as well as other subjects like banned books, Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn, big band leader Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton and Wasson’s department store in Indianapolis, far too much for me to completely transcribe here (See Info Below) but here are some excerpts: “I had a Coke highball today right in the barracks too one of the boys works around in the Red X and he brought a case of coax down, they are the English version and are nothing similar at all and he had a quart of Scott so he poured some in a Coke and gave it to me, darn good combo and on an empty stomach to but I didn’t get high… Went to the show last night and saw Dragon Seed with Kathy Hepburn it was marvelous. They have Pall Mall cigarettes at the P. A. This week so I got five. I figured with their extra link they should last longer. Saw in today’s paper that Lil Smith’s book Strange Fruit and that new book Forever Amber are to be sent overseas and pocket form, boy I hope we get some. I’ve wanted to read those for a long time. Any book that’s banned in Boston I’m going to read they are usually good. I read some good stories in Colliers tonight I bought at the PX dated December 23 some good stories too… Also went to the show last night and saw “In the Meantime, Darling” it was fair. The boys are frying hamburgers and it sure smells good but I wrote my appetite up at the Red X. They had a double or nothing program up at the Red X and good cigarettes out instead of money and some of the questions were pretty tough. I think I’ll try next week and see how I’ll do. A carton is given for grand prize and everyone gets a pack of cigarettes… To top off the evening they had for us a friend show sort of like a USO but of course it had French people all in it. Was fair, one blonde who was also the MC very sexy winch she was tap dancer (it stunk) then they had a brunette who will saying a couple or three songs, fair, then twins (boys) who played the accordion tres bien in particular some French pieces. Then a magician who was excellent with the help of the blonde, then a jugular who was cross side he was pretty good he juggled fire sticks and the same old routine of Indian sticks, top hats, and balls. All in all it was fair it did help though that they did speak English. Would you like to spend a typical evening in our tent. Well Ziggy our star joker starts off, “oh Don, what do you do when it rains back home?” Anton says, “why I don’t know what do you do?” And this is the punch line. Ziggy says “why we just let it rain, now this is the sort of tripe we have to put up with all evening and the first thing he says when he comes in quote “hi good lookin'”, which of course he assured answer, “not you horse face you’re not good-looking” and burst into laughter. Boy what a sense of humor.. If there is any little luxury item that you would like to have such as cosmetics, perfume, silk stockings, why let me know what it is, size, color, brand, etc. and enclose a money order + I’ll send it to you. Perfumes are about $10, silk stockings about $12, so you can see things are high over here but then they always have been… I was on KP yesterday I washed pots and pans and it was a mess. They had fried chicken + it was so greasy and it started sprinkling and a pretty strong wind and it was dusty, the pans get dirty as soon as they were finished being washed boy was I disgusted. It’s fair today and rather cool only the brave are signing today. I shall probably be at Camp Atterbury about August 6 may be a few days before or after. I’ll wire or telephone you so I hope someone is home. They have ice cold beer here and German POWs do the hard work and police the area. We have the creepiest characters in our tent, one from Brooklyn and one from Joisey, the rest are okay, but these to egad!… Went to the cinema tonight and saw “Bowery to Broadway” it practically stunk. I wish they would get one good picture week at least.… Today we started packing up the parachute department and we still have a lot to go but tomorrow is a holiday! Went to the show just got back. Saw a “song to remember” it was very good. I was almost tempted to stay and see it once again. We are cleaning up the whole field so we can move. All the tents have been taken down in our area and the guise of crammed into the various buildings, the cinema, dayroom, etc… Boy that was pretty bad to have happened to dad. I hope he’s better now. They sure have nerve don’t they do a thing like that I have to block for a person’s home. Can’t guys get jobs or do they have to rob people to make a living? Were they Negroes or white? I guess it’s silly asking questions when I know I won’t get your answer in the mail but I may as well ask them… We now have to play baseball, softball, or volleyball of all things. I chose volleyball knowing I couldn’t begin to play bass or softball. We either had to do that or drill so naturally one would rather play than drill so were doing just that. That court-martial won’t go on my service record. 1945 World War II France / Indianapolis Indiana soldier 10 letter set Sturm Ave- Click images to enlarge Description Check it out…Here’s a unique 10 (TEN!) different World War II soldier letters from January 1 to July 28, 1945 written “Somewhere in France” by private Robert L Johnson back home to his folks Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson at 1520 Sturm Ave. in Indianapolis Indiana. That court-martial won’t go on my service record. Here’s info on both books: Strange Fruit is a 1944 bestselling debut novel by American author Lillian Smith that deals with the then-forbidden and controversial theme of interracial romance. Its working title was Jordan is so Chilly, but Smith retitle it Strange Fruit prior to publication. In her 1956 autobiography, singer Billie Holiday wrote that Smith named the book after her 1939 song “Strange Fruit”, which was about lynching and racism against African Americans. Smith maintained the book’s title referred to the “damaged, twisted people (both black and white) who are the products or results of our racist culture.” After the book’s release, it was banned in Boston and Detroit for “lewdness” and crude language. Strange Fruit was also banned from being mailed through the U.S. Postal Service until President Franklin D. Roosevelt interceded at his wife Eleanor’s request. Forever Amber (1944) is a historical romance novel by Kathleen Winsor set in 17th-century England. It was made into a film in 1947 by 20th Century Fox. Forever Amber tells the story of an orphaned Amber St. Clare, who makes her way up through the ranks of 17th-century English society by sleeping with or marrying successively richer and more important men while keeping her love for the one man she can never have. The subplot of the novel follows Charles II of England as he returns from exile and adjusts to ruling England. The novel includes portrayals of Restoration fashion, including the introduction and popularization of tea in English coffeehouses and the homes of the fashionably rich; politics; and public disasters, including the plague and the Great Fire of London. Many notable historical figures appear in the book, including Charles II of England, members of his court, and several of his mistresses including Nell Gwyn. Winsor’s inspiration for the book came from her first husband, who had written his undergraduate thesis on Charles II, completed while he was serving in the army. She read books on the period and wrote numerous drafts of what would become Forever Amber. While many reviewers “praised the story for its relevance, comparing Amber’s fortitude during the plague and fire to that of the women who held hearth and home together through the blitzes of World War II”, others condemned it for its blatant sexual references. Fourteen US states banned the book as pornography. The first was Massachusetts, whose attorney general cited 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and “10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men” as reasons for banning the novel. Winsor denied that her book was particularly daring and said that she had no interest in explicit scenes. “I wrote only two sexy passages,” she remarked, “and my publishers took both of them out. They put in ellipses instead. In those days, you know, you could solve everything with an ellipsis.” Despite its banning, Forever Amber was the best-selling US novel of the 1940s. It sold over 100,000  copies in its first week of release, and went on to sell over three million copies. Forever Amber was also responsible for popularizing “Amber” as a given name for girls in the 20th century. The novel was quite popular with the personnel of the USS Astoria (CL-90) in the Second World War, with a copy circulating through the crew.
