I love these unusual plates from a distinguished British family earthenware manufacturer. The octagonal shape, of course, but also the 1″ ridges, the indents at the points and the sunken center accented by a tan ribbon. (Just so happens that I am selling a completely matching covered bowl from Wood & Sons elsewhere on eBay.)The Wood & Sons business that made these plates (as opposed to the previous century’s Ebenezer Wood, a relative) was established in 1865 by Absalom Wood and his son T. F. Wood. The logo on the bottom of this serving bowl was introduced in 1910 when the company was incorporated as Wood & Sons Ltd. The bowl can’t be any older than that. It’s unlikely to be much newer than the 1930s when they more frequently added “Burslem” to the logo, though they were always located there. The business went public in 1954, into receivership in December 1981, and was sold. It closed entirely in 1995.I’m looking for a good home for these plates (and the wonderful bowl).
