In the fall of 1967, it began to be used in Vietnam, where it immediately demonstrated its high combat qualities. To destroy ground targets, AH-1G helicopters used both built-in weapons – a six-barreled machine gun or a grenade launcher – and outboard ones: blocks of unguided rockets, outboard machine guns, and later – a six-barreled 20-mm cannon. Its firepower made it possible to hit even armored targets. Over time, the AH-1G received a number of improvements, among which were measures to counter heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles. To do this, cooling of the engine exhaust gases was used, in addition, a special pipe was installed on helicopters that diverted hot gases upward into the plane of rotation of the main rotor.
