RARE Limited Edition from the “History of Brewing Series” with original box. (Production mark #08778 on bottom, indicating a very early production item.)This is a RARE limited edition series with only 200,000 manufactured! (this stein #08778 production number making this a very early production item). A tradition of quality from Anheuser/Busch, Inc. continues with this Budweiser Limited Edition IV ceramic stein. The traditions of taverns and public houses are featured on this stein with two scenes common to the colorful past of these institutions. Each scene is depicted in detailed relief and vivid color creating a stein of exceptional handcrafted quality. TAVERN SCENE The traditions established over the centuries in English taverns were brought over to the new world with the colonial settlers. One of these traditions was that tavern signs often used symbols to depict the establishment’s name, such as “The Cock and Bull” or “Boar’s Head”. Signs also carried messages like the one inscribed, “I’ve trusted many to my sorrow. Pay today, I’ll trust tomorrow”. Taverns served many purposes in colonial America. Ironically they were used as the congregation’s meeting place before a community church was erected. Because of this, most taverns were located close to the church. Taverns also served as hospitals, court rooms, post offices, barracks, auction sites, libraries and banks. Whatever their use, taverns were always the center of the town’s social activities. They often had the town’s only copy of distant town newspapers. They were also the best place to hear the town’s gossip. All taverns and public houses offered some kind of entertainment. Trained animals, jugglers, ventriloquists and even balloon ascensions were popular. Of course all types of music and dance were common. PUBLIC HOUSE SCENE Many famous events occurred in taverns. Francis Scott Key composed the final verses of the “Star Spangled Banner” in a Baltimore tavern. Thomas Jefferson penned the first draft of the declaration of independence in the Indian Queen Tavern in Philadelphia. However, taverns are best remembered for their part in kindling America’s love for beer. Taverns brewed their own beers. Brewing was a job of the women of the tavern, the alewife. Unlike today’s beers, the quality of tavern brews varied considerably from oe public house to another. It was in the year 1876 that beers such as Budweiser began appearing in taverns, at last providing a consistent, high-quality drink. Today your favorite tavern continues the traditions of its forbearers. The entertainment is lively, the good conversation and camaraderie still exists and you can order your favorite food and beer.
