eBay Antique Imari Trio Dimensions are approximately: Saucer diameter: 13.3cms (5 1/4″ ins) Cup diameter excluding handle: 10.5cms ( 1/8″ ins) Cup height excluding handle: 4.8cms (1 7/8″ ins) Tea Plate diameter: 18cms (7″ ins) These elegant trios were produced by prestigious English china company Brown-Westhead Moore which evolved into Cauldon circa 1890. Price is for one trio only… volume discount applies. Each tea cup, saucer and plate is decorated with an Imari pattern, all painted by hand with amazing detail in cobalt blue, red and gold then embellished with burnished gold. This pattern was originally produced in the late 1890’s. All three trios are further embellished with a decorative rim and cup handle in gold. The trios mainly date from 1890s… one cup with the Cauldon stamp was produced later, likely early 1900s. Antique collectable set… the trios are of exceptional quality English china and should last many years yet, with care. As the years pass, these lovely china items become more precious… pieces are damaged, lost or collections are broken up. The good news for collectors is that quality pieces should not only hold their value but increase over time. Condition: Generally in excellent to very good antique condition commensurate for age and use. Teeny scratch to one tea plate, see enlarged second last photo… one cup has a teeny fleabite to the rim see last photo. Both faults hardly noticeable. Otherwise no chips, discolouration, fractures or crazing. Pattern, trims and colour all excellent. Great antique trios for a collection… Backstamp: Crown Stamp Estd 1774 Cauldon China England to one cup 2172 Additional Info: The Cauldon works in Staffordshire went through many name changes. Founded by Job Ridgway in 1802, his son John Ridgway continued making porcelain at Cauldon Place, Hanley until 1855. The firm at that time was renamed John Ridgway, Bates and Co. of Cauldon Place worked from 1856 to 1859. Later it became Bates, Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co. from 1859 to 1862. Then T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co. from 1862 to 1904. T.C. Brown-Westhead Moore exhibited at many of the International Universal Exhibitions, winning a gold medal in Paris in 1878. By the 1890s the company was displaying their Royal Apointment which was awarded by Queen Victoria as Potters to her Majesty. Their marks continued to change which may be a bit confusing when trying to ascertain certain dates of manufacture… About 1890, the firm used the Cauldon Crown or Cauldon Ware as part of their mark. Cauldon Ltd. was used between 1905-1920 and Cauldon Potteries from 1920 to 1962. Marks containing Royal Cauldon Est. 1962 or Bristol were made between 1963 and 1977. Pourtney & Co. Ltd. acquired Cauldon Potteries Ltd before the business closed in 1977. Why the name Imari? Named after the Japanese port of Imari. Japanese (and Chinese Chrysanthemum) pottery was extremely popular at the time not only for their decorative patterns but also their delicate and desirable quality. Many English pottery firms such as Wedgwood and Royal Crown Derby would replicate these fabulous intricate patterns hence the terms Japanned or Chinoiserie.
