An original oil painting on canvas depicting a dirt path leading to village homes surrounded by greenery. Painted in 1898 by American artist Walter Eben Nettleton (1861-1936). Nettleton frequently traveled to Puerto Rico and Key West, so there’s a strong chance this painting was made in either of these places. Fragments of an old gallery label indicate that it was once exhibited at the Art Club of Philadelphia. There is illegible handwriting on the back of the frame that appears to instruct the painting to be returned to Walter Nettleton. The painting measures 14 1/4 x 17 1/4 inches. The original gold gilded frame measures 22 1/2 x 26 inches. The canvas has never been lined and is free of tears or repairs, and appears very clean, displayed behind glass. Signed at the lower left and dated 1898. Some minor losses to the frame that are hardly noticeable since they are mostly to the back edging. See photos for examples. Please send any questions. “American born Walter Nettleton spent his early youth in Germany, where his father, a manufacturer, had business interests. The family then returned to Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Nettleton worked in a Bridgeport factory for one year before he entered Yale University, graduating in 1883. It was during his extended European tour that Nettleton decided to become a painter. He entered the Academie Julian in Paris, studying with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefevbre until 1889. Additionally he worked with Charles Carolus-Duran before his return. In New York, Nettleton enrolled at the Art Students League. A frequent contributor to the Paris Salon, Nettleton began exhibiting there in the spring of 1889 and was awarded in 1892. Althoug his primary residence was in New England, Nettleton was often in France. He was know for his now covered winter scenes of New England, as well as his Breton subjects. Nettleton won a silver medal at the Saint Louis Exposition in 1904 as well as a bronze medal at the Buenos Aires Exposition of 1910.”
