Antique Rudolstadt Works Cobalt Jasperware Double Handled Relief 11″ Trophy Vase Features a Rennaissance Revival relief of a flying Putti (Cherub to some) with a lute above flowers. The reverse side features a single flower sprig. The trophy-style handles are each of a partially nude woman sculpture, making this a very unique piece, indeed. We’ve never seen another like it–in person or online. It was manufactured in Germany by Rudolstadt Works between the years 1895 and 1924, certifying it as an antique. You can see the faint, but unmistakable remnants of the identifying hallmark underneath (RW in a diamond with a 3-point crown atop), with the word “Germany” over it, as well as the stamped number code 2314 – 33. Excellent antique condition. There is one small chip to the rim in the jasperware (see final photo). Since the blue color goes all the way through, the chip is not noticeable at a glance. No other flaws. It is a bit dirty in a few spots. See photos. Note: Some people mistake this company for “Royal Rudolstadt.” This fallacy is explained the following article from PM&M. Using the term “Royal Rudolstadt” in context with this manufacturer is highly misleading for potential customers as that registered trademark was owned by Beyer & Bock from the Volkstedt part of the city of Rudolstadt-Volkstedt. Claims of Straus being a US importer of Beyer & Bock items and thus being linked to the Royal Rudolstadt fame are as incorrect as can be; the companies never did any business together. In fact, the two were harsh competitors and Straus never forgave Beyer & Bock their registration of the Royal Rudolstadt mark, a trademark Straus had unsuccessfully tried to acquire himself. The misconception that the marketing term “Royal Rudolstadt” actually belonged to Straus & Sons is largely based on incorrect information published by the Kovels, who apparently simply copied incorrect information from a notoriously unreliable source, author Robert Röntgen. Not only did he screw up on the rightful trademark owner, he also claimed that the Straus mother company was named Lewis Straus & Sons and had resided in Germany under an English company name. Complete nonsense, as mentioned.
