Bachmann 41-630-04 HO Scale Southern EMD GP-30 Diesel Locomotive #2570 in Box Recently, I acquired a small collection of locomotives, tracks and parts from another collector. As I sifted through the collection for the pieces I wanted for my collection: Steam Locomotives, I found that he included a number of various diesel locomotives in various states of condition. Due to my lack of knowledge regarding diesel locomotives, I decided to inspect them and sell them to those whose interest are more centered on the more modern diesel-style locomotives. What are you getting?… I don’t claim to be an expert on these locomotives, so much of my information has been found online, either from other train sites, or through searches of similar eBay offerings. You’re bidding on a GP30 Diesel Southern Locomotive – #41-630-04, Engine #2570. This is the functional version, not the Dummy variant #2571. It comes in the original Bachmann HO Scale box with Styrofoam cradle and instructions sheet. Upon inspection, I found this to be a very nicely cared-for locomotive, with little if any wear to be found on the exterior shell of the locomotive. The hook and horn couplers at either end of the engine are intact. The railings with run around the entirety of the outside of the engine appear to be undamaged with only some minor warping over time. The exterior paint is mainly a forest green with gold and gray highlights. The Southern name is in gold and the engine # 2570 is displayed prominently below the engineer window on either side of the locomotive. The box it comes in is largely undamaged with only one tear in the bottom left corner, probably from someone not being careful while trying to open the box. The clear plastic facing that allows the locomotive to be seen inside the box is intact and undamaged, with only minor yellowing from age. When the locomotive was taken out of the cradle and placed on the track and powered, it did respond, going back and forth. However, it was sluggish to move even though the engine could be heard powering up. A clicking noise could be heard. This could have come from the axles attempting to move, or perhaps from gears needing lubricant from disuse. Not sure. The engineering cabin DID light up (see pics) and the locomotive DID move. However, afterward I turned the engine over to inspect the axles and discovered that the rubber ‘tires’ (traction rings) had split from age, leaving a gap that may have been the source of the clicking, but was obviously the reason why the locomotive responded so sluggishly when powered. It is my opinion that, once the traction rings are replaced, this locomotive will move quickly and smoothly on the track. Overall, it is an excellent piece to add to any collection and I’m sure that any railroad collector who knows their stuff will have replacement traction rings to fit on the axles of this locomotive and should see an immediate positive response when powering up. Easily the quickest and simplest repair to having a great addition to anyone’s collection. Shipping will be via US Ground Advantage to keep costs down. Good Luck!
