The Black Panther: Black Community News Service / Intercommunal News Service (a broken run of 81 early issues in 80 volumes) Title: The Black Panther: Black Community News Service / Intercommunal News Service (a broken run of 81 early issues in 80 volumes) Publication: San Francisco / Oakland: Ministry of Information, 1968-73 Description: An intermittent run of 80 early issues of the most iconic, visually arresting and culturally influential underground newspaper to emerge from the political ferment of 1960s/1970s. Although beginning as a crudely duplicated 4-page newsletter in April 1967, the newspaper quickly came under the competent control of 22-year-old Emory Douglas who not only gave the paper its signature aesthetic brand, but created a significant funding stream for the Black Panther Party in its early years. The Black Panther is the best primary source documenting the party’s political objectives, community programs and general support for domestic and international revolutionary movements over the course of its 15-year history. Many of the issues included here contain Douglas’ provocative artwork often printed in color on the rear cover, or his well-designed centerfold posters, which are supplemented by other artwork and photographs of party members. As noted by Colette Gaiter, “Part of Douglas’s genius was that he used the visually seductive methods of advertising and subverted them into weapons of the revolution. His images served two purposes: to illustrate conditions that made revolution a reasonable response and to construct a visual mythology of power for people who felt powerless and victimized” (p. 96, Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas). The paper was issued weekly for most of its existence, although during the late 1970s it became a monthly after the party began struggling financially. It’s final issue was published in 1980. Issues were sometimes mis-numbered or mis-dated, but we’ve done our best to organize this run into the following issues:Vol II, No. 1 (March 10, 1968), Vol. 2, No. 11 (Nov. 2, 1968), Vol. II, No. 18 (December 21, 1968), Vol. II, No. 21 (Feb. 2, 1969), Vol. II, No. 24 (March 3, 1969), Vol. II, No. 28 (March 31, 1969), Vol. II, No. 29 (April 6, 1969), Vol. II, No. 30 (April 20, 1969); Vol. 3, No. 2 (May 4, 1969), Vol. III, No. 3 (May 11, 1969), Vol. 3, No. 4 (May 19, 1969), Vol. III, No. 5 (May 25, 1969), Vol. 3, No. 6 (May 31, 1969), Vol. III, No. 8 (June 14, 1969), Vol. III, No. 9 (June 21, 1969), Vol. III, No. 11 (July 5, 1969), Vol. III, No. 13 (July 19, 1969), Vol. III, No. 25 (Oct. 11, 1969), Vol. III, No. 28 (Nov. 1, 1969), Vol. III, No. 30 (Nov. 15, 1969), Vol. III, No. 31 (Nov. 22, 1969); Vol. IIII, No. 1 (Dec. 6, 1969), Vol. IIII, No. 2 (Dec. 13, 1969), Vol. IV, No. 3 (Dec. 10, 1967 [sic], actually 1969), Vol. IV, No. 4 (Dec. 27, 1969), Vol. IV, No. 5 (Jan. 3, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 6 (Jan. 10, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 10 (Feb. 17, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 12 (Feb. 21, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 14 (March 7, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 16 (March 21, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 17 (March 28, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 18 (April 11, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 20 (April 18, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 22 (May 9, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 28 (June 13, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 29 (June 20, 1970), Vol. IV, No. 30 (June 27, 1970); Vol. V, No. 1 (July 11, 1970), Vol. V, No. 2 (July 18, 1970), Vol. 4 [sic], actually V, No. 3 (July 25, 1970), Vol. V, No. 4 (August 1, 1970), Vol. V, No. 7 (Aug. 15, 1970), Vol. V, No. 8 (Aug. 21, 1970), Vol. V, No. 9 (Aug. 21, 1970), Vol. V, No. 10 (Sept. 5, 1970), Vol. V, No. 12 (Sept. 19, 1970), Vol. V, No. 14 (Oct. 3, 1970), Vol. V, No. 15 (Oct. 10, 1970), Vol. V, No. 17 (Oct. 24, 1970), Vol. V, No. 18 (Oct. 31, 1970), Vol. V, No. 20 (Nov. 14, 1970), Vol. V, No. 22 (Nov. 28, 1970), Vol. V, No. 23 (Dec. 5, 1970), Vol. V, No. 24 (Dec. 14, 1970); Vol. IV [sic], actually V(?), No. 29 (Jan. 16, 1971); Vol. VI, No. 4 (Feb. 20, 1971), Vol. VI, No. 7 (March 13, 1971), Vol. VI, No. 10 (April 3, 1971), Vol. VI, No. 11 (April 10, 1971), Vol. VI, No. 12 (April 17, 1971), Vol. VI, Nos. 13 & 14 (May 1, 1971), Vol. VI, No. 17 (May 22, 1971); Vol. VII, No. 1 (Aug. 28, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 2 (Sept. 4, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 10 (Oct. 30, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 12 (Nov. 13, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 14 (Nov. 29, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 15 (Dec. 4, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 17 (Dec. 18, 1971), Vol. VII, No. 20 (Jan. 8, 1972), Vol. VII, No. 23 (Jan. 29, 1972); Vol. VIII, No. 5 (April 22, 1972), Vol. VIII, No. 6 (April 29, 1972), Vol. VIII, No. 12 (June 10, 1972); Vol. IX, No. 18 (Feb. 17, 1973), Vol. IX, No. 21 (March 10, 1973), Vol. IX, No. 22 (March 17, 1973), Vol. X, No. 26 (Nov. 10, 1973), Vol. X, No. 30 (Dec. 8, 1973).
