Nevers”, “Elizabeth Ward”, “William Goldstein”, “John Barnum”, “Bill Hoelle” and “Lassie & Rudd”, 6¾x9½. Page 5 of the book From Movie Lot to Beachhead, by the editor’s of Look magazine (1945). Printed text on this page describes the film industry on the eve of Pearl Harbor. ERNIE NEVERS (1903-1976), called “the football player without a fault” by Pop Warner, was an All-American at Stanford. An iron man, he played the 1925 Rose Bowl on two ankles that had been broken earlier in the season. Nevers turned pro with the Duluth Eskimos (1926-1927), but he secured his place in football history with the Chicago Cardinals (1928-1930) by scoring all 40 points in a Nov. 28, 1929 rout against the Chicago Bears. He also scored all 19 of the Cardinal’s points in their next game, giving him a two-game total of 59 points. In his short career, Nevers was made the All-Pro first team five times and scored 301 points in 54 games. He also pitched for the St. Louis Browns from 1926 to 1928, though he was less successful as a baseball player. Nevers was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. ELIZABETH WARD (b. 1961) was Miss Arkansas in 1981 and Miss America 1982. In 1992 she became the first former Miss America to appear on the cover of Playboy. She appeared in several films, beginning with Three For the Road (1987), and had a recurring role on the TV series Highlander. In 1998, she publicly acknowledged having consensual sex with Bill Clinton in 1983, when he was Governor of Arkansas. American composer WILLIAM GOLDSTEIN has scored over fifty films and television series, and also the first full music score for a video game (King’s Quest IV, 1985). He has been nominated for 3 Emmys (for Fame, Happy Endings and Omnibus and for one Grammy (for a Guys and Dolls soundtrack). His commissioned piece for the US Bicentennial, “Celebration Overture,” was performed by the National Symphony Orchestra. JOHN BARNUM (1911-1996) won the Cajun Classic Open in 1962, to become only the 2nd golfer over the age of 50 to win a PGA tour event (the total is now 6), and the only one ever to win his first PGA event after the age of 50. He won 5 events on the Michigan Senior PGA Tour, and was runner-up three times for the PGA Senior Championship (1963, 1964, 1966). BILL HOELLE, a pilot with the 49th Fighter Squadron in World War II, became a Minute Maid executive and a fine amateur golfer. He was jokingly “fired” by Bing Crosby, a major shareholder, after holing out from a rocky beach on the 18th hole to win the Crosby Pro-Am, beating the team Crosby had bet on. Ruddell “RUDD” WEATHERWAX (1907-1985) trained animals for movies and television. He trained the original Lassie for the 1943 film, and also the dogs featured on the TV series (1954-1974). He trained Old Yeller for the 1957 film, and also Homer, the New York Mets mascot in the 1960s. Notches on left edge from previous binding. Lightly soiled. Otherwise fine condition.
