Referred to the select committee upon the subject of steam boilers. [From a Louisville Paper.] STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION. MESSRS. EDITORS: In looking over your paper of the 5th of Decem- ber, I see there the unwelcome account of the explosion which took place on the 25th of November, on board the steamboat Gen. Brown. Now, sir, as I am one of the inspectors in the port of Louisville, and as the Gen. Brown was inspected by me, I feel it my duty to state that myself and Robison De Hart were called on (by Samuel Clarke, master) early in the month of October, and requested by him to make inspection of the steamboat Gen. Brown, her boilers, and machinery; which we did, both going on board, where we made the inspection in full and perfect accord- ance with the late act of Congress to provide for the better security of life and property in steam navigation. It is but due to the master and owners of the Gen. Brown to say that, in our examination, we found all in good condition, and that the master, Captain Clarke, appeared very desirous to have a perfect examination. We made the examination, and gave certificates to that effect. What may have taken place and what did take place after the examination we, as inspectors, are not accountable for. But here I would beg leave to remark, as a matter of vital importance to the public safety, that experience has fully satisfied me of the necessity of Government’s enacting a law regulating the safety valves to engines on board steamboats of all descriptions, without discrimination, and des- ignating some specific weight, to be allowed to be used on the safety valve, to indicate the pressure and govern the same. I would suggest that no weight ought to be used over 100 pounds on the superficies of the valve that is, each superficial inch of the area of the same; and that no ma- chinery or fixtures whatever should be allowed to be attached to the valve lever, or any part thereof, as all such fixtures have a tendency to trammel the free movement of the valve, and cause friction, more or less, as the nature of the structure may be.
