The pretty actress seen on this rare vintage real photo postcard is Miss Lilian Digges. Preliminary research found limited information about this pretty performer. An interview with Miss Digges appears in the “Australian Town and Country Journal” (1901). At the time of the interview, she was about to appear in Lewis Carrol’s “ever delightful Alice in Wonderland”. The interviewer describes Digges as being just over five feet, with “blonde cendre” hair, grey-blue eyes, a winning manner and a charming smile. Digges tells the writer that she was born in England but came from a well known Irish family. Her grandfather was a famous actor. Her parents died when she was young, so she was brought up by two aunts, one of which, was a well known actress. Digges tells an interesting story about her introduction to acting. She was on school holiday and visiting her aunt in the aunt’s dressing room. Before the play, one of the young actresses fell ill, and Digges took the part and played for one week. She then returned to school. She began her stage career in around 1897 in a production of “Red Riding Hood”. Her first London appearance was as a Geisha Girl in one of Mr George Edwarde’s production. Edwardes was a well known theater manager and producer. At the time of this interview, she was still under his management. She had already appeared as the leading actress in many plays including “The Shop Girl”, “The Circus Girl”, and the “Gaiety Girl”. This hand tinted vintage postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.4434 B). The photograph was taken by the Foulsham & Banfield studio. The postmark on the reverse of this postcard reveals that it was mailed in 1907. This card is in good condition (see scans).
