Signed in pencil. On the back of the frame is a handwrittennote found with the image, on browning paper: “Dr. John Brashear, Allegheny County Observatory, sketch by Louise Boyer, Living Room, wall to street.” This appears to be the sketch from which Boyer also made an etching; there is a copy in the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh which can be found online: a close examination shows this is not the etching, but appears to be the basis of it: in the etching, the ear is more defined, the eyes are lighter and there are a number of other subtle differences. Boyer (1890-1976) was a well known artist known for her printmaking techniques and her devotion to Pittsburgh’s industrial imagery. In the 1930s she did a series of prints of Pittsburgh scenes on anodized aluminum plates. Her work is well represented in museums and collections, including the Carnegie, the Metropolitan Museum, the Westmoreland Museum, etc. Very handsome image of one of Pittsburgh’s best known citizens.
