The items weighed on the scale are in grams. Handcrafted in sterling silver this ring is created with saw tooth bezel set needle point turquoise stones. The stem is portrayed with a twisted rope design and a raindrop bottom. The color of the turquoise stones tells me this is indeed one heck of an ole ring! The Zuni Indians began creating Needle Point Jewelry in the 1940’s. Still to this day, this jewelry is created almost entirely by Zuni Indians (some Navajo too); therefore, it is not made anywhere else in the world! It is among some of the most in-depth and labor intensive jewelry to create and very impressionable wearable art…imagine…You will be the envy of your friend, neighbors and family too!!! turquoise stone color changes Turquoise is a compound that includes metals such as aluminum, copper or iron. Since Natural, untreated turquoise is also a porous stone; water, lotions, skin oils and any other liquids it comes in contact with can cause some of these metals to oxidize, or in other words rust. As a result of oxidation, the stones can actually change color. Blue turquoise that contains copper can change from a light blue to a dark green. Some turquoises are more porous than others, even from the same mine. The character of a high quality turquoise is that it changes slowly, meaning it is a harder stone. Many older pieces of jewelry can be identified because the color change in the turquoise and in many pieces of cluster work, for instance Zuni work, some stones will change while others will remain the same blue color they always were even though they are older pieces and worn often. Stabilized turquoise cabs, which is a lesser quality turquoise, are less likely to change color than are natural or untreated stones. Stabilized turquoise is infused with epoxy or reconstituted stone (turquoise powder) is mixed with plastic and then molded. The vast majority of turquoise sold now is treated. Good untreated turquoise fetches a premium price! The silversmith who created this wonderful ring was truly dedicated to his-her craft, but the sad news…Unfortunately the ring does not show an artist hallmark or metal purity stamp which is common for early Native American vintage pieces. Such a shame…beautiful Zuni craftsmanship and no signature to show for it! Even though these ring is not marked .925 or sterling silver, it has been tested positive with no marks or cosmetic damage.
