Original vintage poster in czech language: “SNP (Slovenske Narodne Povstanie) – HRDINNA EPOPEJ NASICH NOVODOBYCH DEJIN – 1979-1944” or “SNP (Slovak National Uprising) – THE HEROIC EPOPEE OF OUR MODERN HISTORY – 1979-1944” Designed by: Zdenek Filip (*1930), most likely in 1979 Printed in: issued by Central Committee of Czechoslovak Communist Party in Publishing House Svoboda, July 1979, printed by Severografia Velky Senov Total measurements: approx. 95x52cm Condition report: poster was stored rolled, shows tears and creasing especially on edges and in corners, also may shows some yellowing and stains, tears and creasing especially alongside the left and right margin area Historical context: The Slovak National Uprising or SNP was an armed uprising of the Slovak domestic resistance during the Second World War against the entry of the German Wehrmacht into the territory of the wartime Slovak Republic. It began on August 29, 1944 as a defense against the German occupation troops, indirectly it was also an attack against the authoritarian government headed by Jozef Tiso, as well as an effort to be on the side of the victorious Allied Powers of the Second World War. The center of the uprising was Banska Bystrica. German troops defeated the insurgent army, and on the night of October 27-28, 1944, part of its troops switched to partisan warfare. The partisans continued to fight against the Nazis until the country was liberated by Soviet, Romanian and Czecho-Slovak troops in the spring of 1945 (Wiki).
