As he came into contact with many imported goods, he dreamed of “creating something that Japan can be proud of to the world.” His passion and inquisitiveness bore fruit, and Ryosuke Namiki, who became a professor, obtained a patent related to ink storage. In 1918, he established Namiki Seisakusho and began manufacturing and selling fountain pens. This was the beginning of his flight to the world. After a visit to Europe, he developed a fountain pen manufacturing method that uses lacquer to prevent the deterioration of ebonite over time. Led by Gonroku Matsuda, who later became a Living National Treasure, he established the Kokkokai (Kokukokai). The brand “NAMIKI” was quickly recognized around the world, and the company signed a sales agency contract in Europe with the world-famous brand “Alfred Dunhill.” It takes more than three months to complete a single maki-e fountain pen, and some go through as many as 130 steps to complete one exquisite fountain pen. It was also one of the moments when Japan’s traditional techniques and perfection were recognized by the world. Pilot Fountain Pen has been shaping ideas that amaze the world, starting with the world’s first capless fountain pen, “Capless”. While outsourcing of parts manufacturing is on the rise, Pilot is one of the few manufacturers in Japan, including the three major manufacturers representing Japan, that casts alloys in-house. In addition, they have developed a rare technique to uniquely mix and weld iridium spheres, a metal used in pen points. They were the first in Japan to do this in 1914, and since then, they have been developing and welding in-house, which is rare in the world, and they handle rare rare metals that are very hard and resistant to wear.
