eBay Welcome to “Dallas Valley Discoveries”. This listing is for a really lovely, very unique, BLUE GLASS CRYSTAL, vintage BULOVA watch. The blue crystal of this watch is extremely rare. Other watches with this color of crystal have prices over $200. This watch predates the era in which Bulova started placing date codes on their movements and cases. This watch was made when they still used symbols. There is a triangle symbol on this watch’s movement. This symbol was used on watches made in the years 1925,35, and 45. The streamlined design of this watch is a little more modern than those of the 1920s, so I believe this watch dates from either 1935 or 1945. I have tried to narrow this down by looking at watch models. The closest match I found is the 1945 President model. There are a few very subtle differences around the lugs, and photos of that model didn’t include this watch’s gorgeous blue crystal, but it’s possible that was a modification done to the watch on the owner’s request. It’s also possible that this watch is a 1935 model and I just haven’t figured out which. Anyhow, this watch is simply amazing to look at. The watch case is rose gold in color and is marked 14K gold filled. The rectangular case measures 22 mm across and 30 mm in length. (Please note that this is a men’s watch. The style for men’s watches of that era was smaller and slimmer than what it is now. This watch also has a thinner band on it but can accommodate a slightly larger band, as the lug width is 14 mm and the current band is only 10mm in width. The current band also shows a lot of wear, so the new owner will want to replace it. I have a number of new old stock bands, and if I have one of the right size, I’ll send it with the watch for free. Back to the description.) The serial on the back of the watch case is 4358088. There are some nicks and scuffs on the case where it opens, probably from tools used to open it. The rose gold outer shell of the case is intact for the most part. It does show wear along the edges of the case on both edges and along the edges of the lugs, where base metal peeks through. There also what may be wear next to the crystal or patina. This area is darkened, but when I looked at it under magnification, it looked more like toning than wear. Gold filled jewelry is made by covering a base metal with an outer gold shell, so when the gold shell wears down enough for base metal to be visible, you can see an obvious thickness to the gold shell. I don’t see that on the bezel next to the crystal. It’s just dark. The base metal of this watch looks like brass along the edges where it shows through, so if it were base metal showing next to the crystal, it would be brassy gold and it’s not. It may be a patina or grime or residue, or some sort of chemical reaction from when the blue crystal was installed that has darkened over the years. It’s just a thin area on the bezel directly next to the crystal and may clean right up, but if it doesn’t, it’s still so thin that it won’t affect the watch’s wearability when the watch is restored. The watch has a copper dial, which you can’t tell because of the blue glass, but I’ve included photos of the dial outside of the case so you can see the dial’s condition for yourself. The most stunning feature of this watch is, of course, the blue glass crystal. There is a chip on one corner of the crystal (see photos). There are also small scratches on the top surface of the crystal, but not terrible (see photos). The watch movement indicates the watch has 21 jewels. The movement is 7AK. This watch was running not very long ago, but I went to set the time to test it, and when I pushed the crown back in something must have happened, because the next time I tried to wind it, I couldn’t. When I tried to wind it, it just moved the hands around like the crown was pulled out, even though it was pushed in. The crown won’t engage the movement to wind it. So, this may be the only issue with the watch. If someone can get it to wind, it’s likely that the watch still runs, though I can’t guarantee it. I’ve included detailed photos of the movement to help answer questions. The inside of the watch case has lots of dates inscribed on the inside of the caseback, so it has been maintained over the years. I can’t make out all of them, but I could read 3-89, 4-72, and 4-55. There are at least 3 to 4 more that I can’t read. You are buying this watch AS IS. I will package it carefully for its journey to its new home, but once the watch leaves my possession at the post office, the sell is final. This watch will make a great addition to one’s vintage watch collection. Pictures are to be considered as part of the description.
