REVIEWS Super performance, superbly recorded Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2015 This is a super performance, superbly recorded. The RCO bring all their experience in Mahler to bear and Jansons leads a live performance that lacks only the last iota of excitement. The recording captures the Gramophone magazine’s “Best Orchestra in the World” (I used to think that was the VPO, but I have to say on hearing this I’m beginning to wonder) in terrific detail and power (I loved the placement of the offstage horn in the Landler movement) and as many others have commented here sonically this is first-rate. The performance is extremely good: Jansons, as you would expect, doesn’t favour extreme tempos and for me this was a consistently satisfying interpretation throughout. One or two moments perhaps lack that last frisson: the entrance of Pan in the first movement being one, and the very end of the piece being another, although I have to say that after 40 years of hearing and loving this symphony I’m tempted to think that this is – at least in part – Mahler’s fault, since I don’t think I’ve ever heard the finale come off completely successfully even under the likes of Solti, Tennstedt, Abbado et al. But these are small quibbles: if you’re in the mood for a modern performance in fabulous sound, then you should hear this. I’d give it 4 and a half stars if I could.
