( CELL PHONE USERS PLEASE CLICK THE “SEE FULL DESCRIPTION” LINK BELOW FOR MORE DETAILS AND PHOTOGRAPHS! ) Scarce Mid 14th to 17th Century German Medieval Topfhelm “Great Helm” or Funeral Helmet Click images to enlarge Description Up for Consideration is a Beautiful Scarce Mid 14th to 17th Century German Medieval Topfhelm “Great Helm” or Funeral Helmet c1430-1600 Offered to you is this Amazing and beautiful mid 14th to early 17th Century German “Great Helm” Topfhelm Helmet which we have been told by several leading experts that this helmet most likely was used into the 17th century as a funeral Helmet. Somewhere around 16th century Great helms became a popular part of Funeral Achievements. Funerary helmets, also known as mortuary helms, were a significant part of the armor placed above or near the carved memorial effigies of knights and nobility from the 14th to the 17th centuries. These helmets were often painted to reduce corrosion. In the 16th century, the tradition of using funerary helmets became more widespread, with even some merchants being granted the right to this honor. The helmets used could be actual pieces of armor worn by the deceased in life, either in battle or at jousts. We believe that this Great Helm is defiantly late medieval period and later used in a burial probably around the time of Elizabeth I of England. It still retains remittance of it’s original tarred black paint . This example of a Topfhelm appeared approximately from the first decade of the 13th century and was used as a combat helmet in the last quarter of the 14th century. This rare helmet is large and measures approximately 13.0 inches tall, 10.0 inches long by 8.0 inches wide. It weighs a whopping 10.9 pounds. CONDITION: Helmet body retains areas of the original dark black funeral paint. It shows heavy oxidation, areas of rust especially on the inside back where the head of the deceased would have rested. Areas of missing metal along the bottom edges which appear to be filed down to avoid further deterioration and injury. Some heavy cleaning and possibly some restoration work to the front cross bar. Construction is consistent with period blacksmiting and it shows appropriate and consistent metal deterioration from a piece being over 500 years old. This helmet has defiantly been cared for over it’s lifetime. This came out of a private collection in Edinburgh, Scotland. A Fantastic piece of Northern European Late medieval period and style Armor that would make it excellent for display! THE GREAT HELM The great helm or heaume, also called Topfhelm, pot helm, bucket helm and barrel helm, is a helmet of the High Middle Ages which arose in the late twelfth century in the context of the Crusades and remained in use until the fourteenth century. The barreled style was used by knights in most West European armies between about 1210 to 1340 AD and evolved into the frog-mouth helm to be primarily used during jousting contests. In its simplest form, the great helm was a flat-topped cylinder of steel that completely covered the head and had only very small openings for ventilation and vision. Later designs gained more of a curved design, particularly on the top, to deflect or lessen the impact of blows. The helmet was also extended downward until it reached shoulders. The great helm ultimately evolved from the nasal helmet, which had been produced in a flat-topped variant with a square profile by about 1180. From this type of helmet an intermediate type, called an ‘enclosed helmet’ or ‘primitive great helm’, developed near the end of the 12th century. In this helmet the expansion of the nasal produced a full face-plate, pierced for sight and breathing. This helmet was largely superseded by the true great helm by c. 1240. Although the great helm offered vastly superior protection than previous helmets, such as the nasal helm and spangen helm, it limited the wearer’s peripheral vision, and in addition to being heavy, the mass-produced form (flat-topped without ventilation holes) provided little ventilation and could quickly overheat in hot weather. Knights usually wore the great helm over a mail coif (hood) sometimes in conjunction with a close-fitting iron skull cap known as a cervelliere. The later development of the cervelliere, the bascinet, was also worn beneath the great helm; men-at-arms would often remove the great helm after the first clash of lances, for greater vision and freedom of movement in melee combat. The bascinet had a mail curtain attached, a camail or aventail, which superseded the coif. Mail throat and neck defences such as these were made obsolete when plate gorgets were introduced, around 1400. The bascinet evolved from its early skull cap form to supersede the great helm for combat. The great helm fell into disuse during the 15th century; however, it was used commonly in tournaments where a version of the great helm, the frog-mouthed tilting helm, evolved. .Somewhere around 1600 Great helms became a popular part of Funeral Achievements. Funerary helmets, also known as mortuary helms, were a significant part of the armor placed above or near the carved memorial effigies of knights and nobility from the 14th to the 17th centuries. These helmets were often richly decorated with floral designs and coats of arms, and they were sometimes painted to reduce corrosion. In the 16th century, the tradition of using funerary helmets became more widespread, with even some merchants being granted the right to this honor.
