SS Jeremiah O’Brien World War II Liberty Ship memorial ship cover postmarked at San Francisco, CA on June 24, 1996. Color printed logo cachet #113 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS for Saginaw Chapter. Cover franked with a 32 cent lighthouse stamp. The ship cover is one of a group honoring WW II Ships named for famous Americans. Cover prepared on an Archive Quality Envelope with gum on flap. SS Jeremiah O’Brien: this 441 foot cargo ship was built in South Portland, Maine in 1942-43 and was launched on May 24, 1943. The vessel transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II, including the Normandy Invasion. Records note the ship survived the war and was placed in the Suisun Bay Reserve fleet in 1946. She was restored by an all-volunteer group, NLSM, and has been a museum ship on San Francisco Bay since 1979. This cover documents her departure to NW ports on a goodwill voyage in 1996 that went as far north as Vancouver, Canada. The Saginaw Chapter #59 USCS is offering covers for each of the ports she visited on the tour.
