MacGregor Jr., who is known in the New England area as the Junkyard Artist. —————————————————————————–Some states have majestic eagles, grand mountains, famous monuments or statues as icons. But in Rhode Island, we have something much better: a giant blue insect known as the Big Blue Bug. If you are a Rhode Islander, then you are very proud of our iconic blue bug located along route 95 in Providence RI. The Big Blue Bug, also known as Nibbles Woodaway, is the giant termite mascot of Big Blue Bug Solutions, located along I-95 in Providence, Rhode Island. The Bug is 928 times the size of an actual termite, standing at 9 feet tall and 58 feet long, and weighing 4,000 pounds. It was constructed in 1980 over a four-day period from wire mesh and fiberglass in late 1980 at a cost of $20,000. The Bug was originally painted purple, the color of an actual swarming termite when observed under a microscope, but the paint soon faded to a pale blue and the landmark became so well known in that condition that it was never repainted to its original color. The Bug is annually “dressed” for July 4th, Halloween, and Christmas (in lights, reindeer antlers, and a blinking red nose). On April 2012 New England Pest Control announced that they would be changing the company’s name to “Big Blue Bug Solutions”. The bug wore a necktie for the occasion. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self-taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts.
