THE GUARDSMAN, 3 Sheet Poster, No Theatre, Tour, 1951. The revival of the Ferenc Molnar play opened it’s Pre-Broadway tour in Buffalo, NY on 01/25/51 and played 23 northeastern and mid-western cities before closing on the road on 06/02/51 without ever opening on Broadway. The cast includes Jeanette MacDonald, Gene Raymond, Herbert Berghof and Josephine Brown. Directed by Sam Wanamaker. The heading on the poster declares “Hear Jeanette Sing!” Jeanette MacDonald’s character was changed to be be a singer and she sang 4 songs including Clair De Lune with new lyrics by Gene Raymond. The photo was taken standing on a step ladder, hence the slanted appearance, but the poster is rectangular. Some of the posters have minor tears or short creases in the folds which have been repaired on the back with thin archive tape. Condition is near excellent with minor wear. 3 Sheet Posters are advertising theatre posters printed on heavy paper and usually come folded in more than one section like old billboards — hence the name. Commonly displayed in subway stations and most famously in areas like Shubert Alley in Manhattan’s Theatre District. This is NOT a reproduction!! CONDITION: I use a six-step condition scale to describe the overall paper quality: Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. Good means just that: desireable for a collection with no immediate need to upgrade. Excellent and Mint are usually reserved for publisher and music store remainders. Expect Good-minus and Fair to have considerable wear. All specific condition faults are noted after the general condition. IMAGES: I use a digital camera so the entire piece is visible.
