Crease b.r.h. corner*Notes on Programme Condition* Many of our programmes are 70 to 130 years old and consequently usually have signs of “yellowing”, “tanning/toning” and, in some cases, “foxing” (brown spots). Print quality varies and there may also be some small creases, thumbed corners and minor tears along the edges of the pages and, particularly, the covers. Some programmes have poorly and unevenly cut edges to the covers and inner pages. If metal staples were used they may have rusted, partially or completely, leaving rust stains and some, or all, of the pages unstapled. In some instances, the crease along the seam (fold) of the cover pages may have split resulting in the covers separating. Depending on the extent of these various imperfections, and the programmes age, we grade it as being “Very Good, Good, Moderate, Poor or Very Poor” and, if we consider it relevant, we specify significant damage. The grading and comments are our own opinion and are not any form of “warranty”. Please study the photos closely before bidding for, or purchasing, any programme Notes of possible interest :Established in 1818 the 1000+ seat theatre in Lambeth, London, was renamed the Royal Victoria Theatre (1833) and, by the late 1800’s, was commonly known as “The Old Vic”. The manager from1898 was Lilian Baylis and she began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914 and championed the rebuilding of the derelict Sadlers Wells Theatre (between 1925 and 1931) and established their ballet company. Lilian Baylis was the lessee and manager of both theatres until her death in 1937. Bruce D (Digby) Worsley, a WW1 flying ace, then became manager of both theatres until about 1940 when, for a while, Tyrone Guthrie became the director of The Old Vic. The theatre was bombed during the blitz and was closed for several years until it re-opened, as a Grade II listed building, in 1951.The Old Vic was the origin of many of London’s theatres and performing arts companies. Its repertory company was based at the theatre and became the core of the National Theatre in 1963. The company incorporated many of the great actors of the 1930’s to 1950’s. These included Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, Charles Laughton, Peggy Ashcroft, Flora Robson, James Mason, Athene Sevier, Marius Goring, Michael Redgrave, Edith Evans, Alec Guinness – and numerous others! The National Theatre moved to its own building on the south Bank in 1976 From the mid 1979’s The Old Vic was first the home of the Prospect Theatre Company and then the “Old Vic Youth Theatre”. In 1985 the theatre was restored, and owned, by a Toronto entrepreneur (Mirvish) who sold the building in 1998 to a charitable trust and it is now a “not-for-profit” theatre.
