UTICA Single-Blade Hobo Knife, Wood Handles; No Attachments: BUYER NOTE: THIS SALE DOES NOT INCLUDE SPOON OR FORK. KNIFE WITH HANDLE ONLY! This pattern, the Hobo knife, has become pretty rare among modern knife makers. It used to be popular among more demographics than just hobos (who couldn’t afford them anyway). Construction workers who carried their lunch to work used them; Scouts bought them to camp to eat, which their camp-knives couldn’t help; traveling salesmen used them while driving from town to town. This market existed approximately from the 1930s to early 1950s. The Hobo knife pattern carries a knife, fork and spoon. Sometimes openers and corkscrews were added, but these accessories outgrew the simpleness of the tool. My knife takes “basic” to the extreme: The knife has no accessories attached. The spoon and fork were supplied detached and carried in a separate pouch. If they weren’t needed for a given day, they were left in a drawer at home. Thus, the knife was slimmer and lighter, suitable for your EDC. But if they would be needed today, the pouch would be carried in your pocket and the spoon or fork would be clipped onto the brace opposite the blade-end. Back to today’s knife. It has a larger all-steel frame and a larger spring to provide for the different stresses placed on a fork or spoon than on a cutting blade. The cavity is clean and shiny. The wood handles are attractive. Artists call the random looks of a wood sample, “the beauty of the wood”. The color is medium brown with mild yellow and red flavors; the grain is tight and palpable. Brass handle pins and nickel-steel pivot pins and bolsters are solid and square. The accessory pin is larger for greater control of the clip-ins. Carbon steel blade is fresh and mirror polished.
