***********The AS 1686 manual wind movement gains about 5 minutes by the end of its approximate 40 hour power reserve period. Given this and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.*********** This vintage 1960’s Waltham has under the heavily scratched crystal a silvery champagne “SWISS” only signed dial that appears to be in lovely condition. The lume, which no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The gold colored hands complement the dial beautifully. The chrome-plated case shows honest wear and brassing. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “ANTIMAGNETIC | SHOCKRESISTANT | WATERPROOF | CHROME TOP ST. STEEL BACK” with “WALTHAM” stamped along the inner edge. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “WALTHAM WATCH Co.” stamped AS 1686 manual wind movement runs strong, albeit fast. After recently winding the brassed non-screwdown crown 29 full revolutions the movement gained about 5 minutes by the end of its approximate 40 hour power reserve period. The crown winds smoothly. Given that the movement runs fast and considering its unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.This watch measures approximately 34 mm excluding the crown, approximately 36 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the fixed bezel, is approximately 6 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 8 mm. A complete overhaul is recommended. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time.
