Rockefeller, millionaire Maecenas, produced one of the most powerful architect-client relationships of all time. Their impact drew other powers, like Robert Moses—a civil servant who was neither servant nor, always, civil—and William Zeckendorf—half developer, half dreamer, and all salesman—into a scheme of building and real estate development that paved the way for the New York City we know today. Emerging from the chrysalis of Rockefeller Center, Harrison masterminded great campaigns of a new monumentality: the United Nations complex, Lincoln Center for the Per-forming Arts, and the Albany Mall. These real-life epics are unique in the annals of mod-ern architecture; while the visionaries drew, Harrison built. Along with these colossal structures, Harrison planned and built protects of lesser stature but of no less significance. Private houses for the Rockefeller family; the First Presbyterian Church, or “Fish” church, in Stamford, Connecticut; the first aluminum skyscraper for Alcoa in Pittsburgh; and important aspects of New York City’s airports all pay homage to Harrison’s intriguing and complex talent. When, in time, the nature of the Harrison-Rockefeller team changed radically, everybody lost. Victoria Newhouse traces this absorbing and culturally crucial history in all its human intricacy from Harrison’s humble beginnings in New England to his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then to apprentice years in New York’s leading architectural offices.
