Cryogenic Gas Processor OVERVIEW Cryogenic gas recycling system for recovery of valuable gas from process gas streams. System was built for recovery of xenon gas in excimer laser gas waste streams, but can be used for other target gases in process streams. Consists of a 1 meter high by 8 ” diameter multi-element cold trap and a recovery flask, each of which can be independently immersed in liquid nitrogen contained in two Andonian Cryogenics superinsulated vacuum dewars which are mounted side by side for convenience on the process cart. A vacuum pump sucks waste gas through system. Xenon, or another target gas freezes out in cold trap before other gases. After all the xenon or other target gas in the exhaust gas stream is frozen out, this trap is then allowed to “warm up” while the connection to the recovery bottle is opened. Escaping gaseous xenon (or other target gas) is then trapped in the recovery bottle (flask). After all the target gas is transferred, the recovery bottle is then taken out of cryogenic bath. It contains high-purity pressurized target gas at room temperature, with the pressure dependent on the number of moles of gas trapped during the recovery process. The system incorporates an Andonian Cryogenics automatic liquid nitrogen level controller, and means for transferring the liquid nitrogen from the process dewar to the recovery flask dewar. All of the Globe cryogenic valves are new and in good working order. The process control valves are also new and in good working order. Recovery efficiency is around 95%.This rolling cart unit is sturdily built out of Unistrut, and is mounted on casters for easy movement around a lab or industrial environment. COLD TRAP The stainless steel cold trap (see picture) is composed of an upper chamber, a lower chamber, and a manifold of (20) 27.5″ long tubes (0.5″ OD and a .120″ wall thickness) which connect the two chambers. The upper chamber is 8.0″ in diameter by 1.0″ high and the lower chamber is 8.0″ diameter by 4.0″ high. The walls of the chambers are 0.250″. The total interior usable volume of the cold trap, including the upper and lower chambers and the interior of the connecting tubes is approximately 2.19 liters. The steel used for construction of the cold trap is TP 304 stainless, A+P Heat Number TV 3669N(ASTM A213/A263). The trap has been safety pressure tested to 1,800 psi (about three times its intended working pressure). AUTOMATIC LIQUID NITROGEN LEVEL CONTROLLER The automatic liquid nitrogen level controller is Model 450A with remote sensors and solenoid valve. Controller boasts a low level and a high level alarm. RECOVERY FLASKThe recovery bottle is a 14″ high by 6.5″ diameter, 2.34 liter capacity spun aluminum pressure cylinder conforming to CTC/DOT-3AL2216 FF38929 Luxfero 9A91 SM1. At 800 psi, the bottle will hold 127 liters of xenon, or other target gas. Additional recovery bottles are available. DEWARSThe dewars are 35.75″ high by 9.25″ diameter (interior) with mounting flange. The capacity of each is approximately 40 liters. RECOVERY ECONOMICSThe economics of gas processing/recycling varies according to the target gas. Xenon is an extremely rare and expensive gas which is present in the atmosphere at only 1 part in 20 million. It is normally produced by liquification of air. Xenon normally retails for about $60 per liter. If you are using a lot of xenon you could save a significant amount of money annually by recovering your xenon from waste gas streams. For instance, if you use 1,000 liters annually, you could save about $60,000 by recycling. Other gasses can also be recovered profitably.
